The King Sedgemoor Inn, Bridgwater Aim: Network and learn from other DJ’s, develop business, promote the industry NADJ members and Non-members are STILL all welcome to attend the meetings – there is no pressure to become a NADJ member. Introductions & Apologies, Minutes From Last Meeting: Attendees = 28, Guest = 1 Speaker: Steve Burley – “Methods used to get the Sales” - Target who you need to speak to – make lists, contact details, databases
- Make sure you speak to the decision maker – if you can’t, call back at another time
- Need to prepare before you call
- Aim to generate power and entusiasm – stand up and smile, motivate yourself
- Ask for help – people are willing to help if they think you’re after help, rather than sales
i.e. ‘I’m wondering if you can help me – can you point me in the direction of the events organiser’.
- Don’t ask closed questions
- Can you send info? Yes, send info, but only if you know what info they might be interested in! Need to find out what is suitable before sending general literature.
- Good to get an appointment… ‘I’m in the area next Monday and Tuesday, which is good for you’ – giving them the option to change the date but encouraging a meeting.
- What to wear? Mirror people’s dress sense. Dress for the occasion. If not sure, suit is best. Can take of the jacket or tie.
- General opinion, don’t wear corporate logos or polo shirts – one customer commented that it makes you look like an electrician.
- When making sales calls, set yourself a target – easier to keep motivated.
Roger thanked Steve for an informative presentation. Speaker: Phillipa – “WPA – Health insurance, Taunton” - From WPA, a non for profit private medical care association.
- No shareholders, only policy holders.
- Can put together practical and affordable medical programmes for people who need to work hard physically, and can’t afford to take time off as there may be nobody to cover them.
- WPA don’t put a premium on you when you claim.
- 65 years is the upper age limit to join, but can carry on past this age once you have cover.
- More info can be found by asking Phillipa for more literature.
Marketing Budget: Roger asked the group who would be willing to contribute to a local marketing fund. Show of hands, say the majority would, depending on the purpose. John brought up the issue of vetting NADJ members. Suggested a badge system as the current system just shows they are insured, not that they are a good DJ. Would like to see someone from NADJ attend gigs and rate DJ’s to check their suitability for the group. Would help to market DJ’s as a group of professional people. Would like to see an accreditation system enforced by the NADJ. Heated debate by all. Most people in agreement, but can see practical issues i.e. who can attend gigs, who decides what is acceptable etc. Roger will take to national NADJ to find if there are any plans to vet members in terms of capability as well as PAT testing etc. Email Roger if you have any ideas for the marketing budget.

NADJ Marketing - Leaflets Why should you use an NADJ leaflet to send out to hotels? Promotes NADJ as a brand. Need to start educating the public and people involved in booking DJs and discos that there is a level of competence – the NADJ are attempting to develop this. Fundraising Raffle Please bring anything along as a fun raffle prize – doesn’t have to be DJ related, any item will be appreciated to raise funds. Fun Fine System? Idea to raise funds – declined by the group. Entry Fee £1 entry fee to all NADJ meetings. Agreed by the group. Money will be spent on a fun social activity for the group. i.e. camping, BBQ etc. Will be decided upon by the group. South West Directory Suggested that a South West directory of SW NADJ members should be created, including contact details of approved services, i.e. Charlene Cummings (Photography) etc. Next Meeting: Next meeting will be held on Monday 6th June. Venue to be confirmed. Graham Watts will organise the next venue. Remember to bring £1 for the entry fee. Please inform Nick or Roger in advance if you can or cannot attend.
