NADJ South West Monday 1st August 2011 Watchfield Inn, Watchfield, Somerset, TA9 4RD. Roger opened the evening by thanking everyone for attending and informing guests that we run the meeting as NADJ South West and the Somerset Supper Club. Members and non-members of NADJ are welcome to attend. The minutes of the last meeting were agreed and followed by an introduction round where guests explained who they were and what sort of work they were looking for. Apologies were received from Frank Jolly, Dave Sims, Mathew Major, Joe Tong, Trevor Brooks, Darren Lee-Roberts, and Andy Harris. John from Oasis was introduced and he mentioned that a number of the Lantra products from our last meeting could be found online at the same or lesser prices than was quoted in our last meeting. The guests and John from Oasis were under the impression that the prices were a special for our members and for a limited time only, not prices that were readily available online. John will investigate this on the group's behalf.
Note from Nick Burrett: It should be noted that Lantra proposed the visit to our branch and John from Oasis was asked by me to organise the logistics of their visit. I hope that Lantra's pricing policy does not in any way hinder the relationship between our group members and John from Oasis. Thank you. John followed this by introducing Richard from Numark who gave us a short history of his career that includes work as a mobile DJ as well as working at Numark. Richard also presented a brief history of Numark. A range of Numark products were described and demonstrated. Graham Watts has donated an award, which will be given to the guest who has offered the most support to NADJ locally this quarter. The Shimmering Lights & NADJ South West merit cup will be awarded to a member or non-member. This month's award goes to Peter Lock who has supported Nick and Roger with everything done in the group so far. Pete thanked the group for his award. Roger then talked about some proposed changes to the way the group is run. Roger suggested the group came to learn how to improve their business rather than listen to the latest speakers or view the latest lights. Roger suggested a 10-minute education spot each month, which would highlight something you can do today to improve your business. The group agreed and this will be included in future meetings. If you have experience in DMX, midi controllers, promotional videos, marketing, inbound telephone sales, meeting the client, websites, sound, personal presentation, upselling, cold calling, music programming, wedding ideas, crowd activities, getting midweek work then please volunteer your services for the 10 minute education spot. Roger also mentioned that he is happy for there to be power groups within the bigger group but asked that we show respect when other people are talking. If we are going to arrange someone to talk then please have the courtesy to listen rather than talk over the speaker. Roger also requested that members of the group email him to describe how they market their business at the moment so that any future marketing education can be tailored to the needs of the group.

. The first of the education spots will be on DMX by Simon Fletcher. Simon asked that each member brought in a different light so that Simon can set it up to demonstrate DMX. The first education spot will be 30 minutes, however the aim for all future education will be 10 minutes. Our next subject was the October meeting. Bob at Batmink has suggested that we could meet at their Glastonbury showrooms in October for a sound and lighting demonstration. Because we have an arrangement with our existing venue this means there will be two meetings in that month. Roger mentioned that NADJ members get trade discount at Batmink on production of their membership card. In Any Other Business Derek and Rick asked if anyone could come up with a name for their business. Nick and Steve thanked Steve and Roger respectively for passing on work. Nick then went on to advise members of NADJ that there is now an availability calendar on the NADJ website. Nigel commented that there might be a problem with adding dates to the calendar. Roger has received the following email relating to this. Roger also added that NADJ members can choose up to 5 counties to list their business in. ***** Hi Roger, at the moment it will be one date at a time, I've removed the pop up confirmation to make it return to the page faster, but there's not an easy way of submitting multiple entries that's going to be completely idiot proof as there's a lot of error checking has to go to make sure people don't submit multiple events for the same day and stuff like leaving the date blank! As it's a public facing Google calendar (this was done deliberately to help boost members rankings to their profiles) I'm restricted to how much customisation i can do, without writing a complete new front end interface for their service. Bearing in mind this service is supposed to assist people looking for a disco last minute or at short notice, we'd only expect people to be putting up a few months worth of available dates not the entire year (some people have put a years worth up and in my opinion I don't think it gives the right impression having every Friday and Saturday for the year listed). So at the moment it will be pick date, save, pick date, save, pick date, save etc, if anyone like Nick has any idea on how to pick multiple dates I'd love to know how, but at the moment there's no a simple way of doing it. As a Google Developer i submitted the concept to their calendar team and they suggested I get people to submit CSV files in a certain format that could be uploaded and processed in order to add multiple dates. To be honest I think that would be stupidly complicated for the majority of our members. As always I'm always available for any new ideas so let me know ! Paul Arnett Chairman NADJ ***** Pete Lock mentioned the Wales Branch of the NADJ holds their annual Summer BBQ at 7pm on Tuesday 9th August 2011 at the Lakeside Caravan Park Club House, Llangors, Brecon, Powys, LD3 7TR. All are welcome. Roger announced that John Tingley is has been and still is the premier personality jock in the area for the past 20 years and has offered assistance with doing something different with their disco, he is quite happy to have a one to one with them for a couple of hours. The result will be that you will come away with some good ideas. Roger will send a follow up this offer with an email to everyone and asks that if you have a meeting with John please give Roger some feedback. There was a small bring and buy sale. This month Graham brought 4 scanners with a DMX controller along to the meeting. James from J's Disco was selling a laser. A gold microphone was sold. Roger concluded that he was very pleased to see John Lasek back with us after his heart attack and John thanked everyone for their support. Roger thanked John from Oasis and Richard from Numark and closed the meeting. ----- Next meeting: The Watchfield Inn, Watchfield, Highbridge TA9 4RD Monday 5th September at 7.30pm for an 8.00pm start. 1.
